Cannot close IE window

I'm running IE 6 on XP. When I bring up IE the browser comes up OK, but the CPU usage for the IE process goes to 100% (which seems strange). Also, I cannot close the IE window without using the Task Manager to end the process. Clicking File/Close has no effect and clicking the close icon in the top right-hand corner of the window also has no effect. I thought that I might have the Sasser worm so I followed Microsoft's instructions to remove it, but the worm removal program said that my system does not have the Sasser worm. I removed IE and reinstalled it, but this did not fix the problem.

Randy,
This is probably being caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite)

Work through the solutions (CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot) at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security tips on that
page.

Additional information at:
The Parasite Fight http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
Bugs, Glitches & Stuffups: http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm

If not caused by malware, consider disabling (for diagnostic purposes)
legitimate programs running in the background which might be interacting
with IE- security, antivirus, ad-blockers, toolbars & other add-ons, etc.
You may have to uninstall then reinstall, or not reinstall, a program.

Hope this helps,
Don
