cannot capture video

Movie maker will no longer capture my video. I have a Dell 4550 with windows
XP and a capture card that came with the package and was able to capture in
the past. Now it gives me a message of "specified video deivce is not
responding. Verify device is coneected properly, is turned on and try to
capture again." The video I am trying to capture is a MiniDV off a Sony
video camera. I tried another avenue and was able to capture the MiniDV,
plus even old analog Hi 8 video on my Roxio movie studio program. Then just
yesterday, it decides even Roxio will not capture either types. I have
checked the connections. I also tried to capture with My Sonic DVD -- no
luck). Also called Dell for support. They checked hardware with me over
phone and it all shows as working fine. They claim it is a software problem
-- can that be the case on all three software?!?! Please help.

Hi Amie
When a device stops working it's usually cos you've changed something in the
system. Think - have you installed anything new or changed any settings on
any media software (eg MPlayer) that may have upset your device driver? I
know sometimes a card can just pack up but it's more often software changes
that make something stop working.
If you just installed something before your capture card stopped capturing
things, try uninstalling the new thing.
If not, maybe try removing the card driver and reinstalling it from your (?)
CD.
Gee, PCs waste a lot of time don't they?
Good luck!
