Cannot boot to desktop

I

Ian R

Hi

My laptop (running XP Home) begins to boot up but gets stuck at the Windows
screen with the animated segmented bar - although the bar is moving
(apparently depicting progress) it never gets any further.

Pressing Alt Tab reveals two boxes both titled "logon".

But selecting either one doesn't help.

Cant boot into safe mode either!

A friend had this happen on his desktop PC and the only resolution was a
full clean re-install of XP and applications.

Of course that hours of work so I'm just hoping that someone here may have
come across this scenario before and can suggest any possible solutions.

Many thanks

Ian

Hi

Can you access the screen that has 'Last Known Good Configuration' as an
option to try that - keep tapping the F8 key after a reboot?

Hi Will

Thanks for replying.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I tried that and it made no difference.

Hi

Depending on what kind of XP CD you have, you could try a 'Repair' install
of XP.

What make and model is your computer?

What types of system CD do you have?

Have you tried booting with all hardware disconnected except keyboard,
mouse and monitor?

Hope this helps.
