Cannot backup Outlook to another PC on our home network

Jeff Ingman

Outlook 2007
MS Vista
Home Network
Norton Internet Security

I cannot backup Outlook from one PC to another computer on our network. Nor
can I copy/paste the pst file to the intended destination folder on the other
PC.

I can copy paste other files to the same destination folder so I'm
relatively sure Nornton and sharing is set properly.

When I try to backup or copy/paste the pst file (with Outlook closed) the
process hangs and times out.

Any clues?

(Please read post.)

Yes, Outlook is closed. I realize you cannot backup Outlook when it is open.

My apologies, I wasn't very clear. What I meant was, is Outlook.exe running
in the processes of the task manager?

No Outlook is not running in background either.

When I try to setup the backup from Outlook I get a message saying I have to
close Outlook. So I close it and the backup dialog starts but times out with
a message saying the desitnation/network path is not available.

This is bogus because I can access the destination file with Windows
Explorer from the originating PC. And I can paste Word docs into the
destination folder from the originating PC.

I cannot however paste the pst file to the destination folder (with Outlook
closed). I get the same bogus message.

I have checked from the destination PC to be sure the destination folder is
shared... and permission to modify files is checked (confirmed by the fact I
can paste Word docs there).

I'd guess this is a Vista issue but I'm not certain. Would you advise I post
my problem for the Vista experts to deal with? What's funny tho is my prob is
unique to an Outlook pst file.

Have you attempted this but instead close Outlook first before you start the
copy & paste of the PST file?

Have you attempted "this"....

What do you mean by "this"?

If you simply mean have I attempted the copy/paste of the pst file with
Outlook closed... the answer is yes.

One thing I did not try is to backup to a folder on the originating computer
and then copy/paste to the destination PC over the network. But even if that
worked I would not be happy.

I simply want to backup normally over our network to another PC and set it
so backup occurs every time Outlook is closed (or every few days when Outlook
is closed).

K...

What you say seems logical... however although I can copy/paste the pst file
to another location on the originating computer I cannot copy/paste it to a
folder on another computer on our network. (with Outlook closed)

When I attempt to paste the pst to the destination folder on the other
computer the "wheels turn" for several seconds then an error message appears
saying "there is a problem accessing [path and pst file name].

I can copy/paste other files to the destination folder... but not a pst file.

I'm going to post a description of this problem on the Vista newsgroup to
see if those people have any bright ideas why I can't paste a pst file over
the network... (or use Outlook 2007's backup procedure.)
