Cannot access my Desktop

Windows XP Home Edition

I am unable to access my desktop. Windows xp loads up to the wallpaper but
no icons, start menu, task bar appears. All I see is the wallpaper and my
mouse pointer. The mouse works but I cannot get to any programs, setup, etc...

I tried to boot into all options (safe mode, safe mode with network,
previous working, safe mode with prompt, etcc....) and they all freeze at the
initial screen with a working mouse but no menu choices whatsoever.

Can I fix this problem without reinstalling Windows XP?

Press CTRL + ALT + DEL and then run a new task, type in "explorer.exe"
without the quotes to see if it brings up your desktop. If that works and
you get in, try to do a nice clean reboot first. Just to see if it works as
has been the case in the past. If that works or even if it doesn't do this:

Try to restore to an earlier time if it didn't work. Make sure you scan for
malware with the latest definitions. Here's some freeware stuff for you that
is very reputable and effective. I'm going to leave the whole list intact
for you so that you can even see the firewall solutions that are available
if you hadn't been using the Windows Firewall (aka ICF or Internet
Connection Firewall) and I hope that you're able to fix your problem. I'd
personally try to restore to an earlier time, perhaps as far bac

The number of times it has been given out as a viable option leads me to
believe that this has been extended. You should, of course, verify this on
your own.

P.S. If that doesn't work there's nothing wrong with a good swift kick the
the side of your tower ;) I've found that a faulty monitor that gave me
trouble clears up immediately if I have a hammer near by. The sad thing is
it really does...
