I keep getting an error message that says

"Windows cannot open help and support because a system service is not
running. To fix the problem start the service named 'help and support'"

Start the Help and Support Center service and set it to Automatic. Follow
these steps:

Click Start, Run and type Services.msc
Double-click Help and Support
Set the Startup type to Automatic
Start the Service

If the Help and Support service is missing in the Services.msc listing, this
may be due to accidental deletion of a registry key. Download helpsvc.zip
file from here ( http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/helpsvc.zip ) and unzip the
contents. Extract helpsvc.reg to the Desktop and double-click to merge the
contents to the registry. This restores the Help and Support service entry.

Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage". There should be something
called "Services" on your left-hand side. Expand it. Search for "Help and
Support" on your right-hand side. Right-click on it and select "Properties".
Change the setting so that it starts automatically. (Click on the "Start
buttom" as well so the service can run instantly.)

Thanks for replying Yi. I have already done that a few times but it does not
help. I've changed to "Automatic" and "status" is shown as "Started" but
when I click on "Help and Support" in the "Start" menu nothing happens. Any
other suggestions.

Now you don't get the error about needing to start the service?

After starting the service, now "nothing happens"?

If that is the case, try this:

Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.

type in cd \ <hit enter>
type in cd %windir%\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries <hit enter>
type HelpSvc.exe /regserver /svchost netsvcs /RAInstall <hit enter>
type HSCUpd.exe -i hscmui.cab <hit enter>
type HSCUpd.exe -i hscsp_w3.cab <hit enter>
