Can See Computer But Not Hard Drives/Folders

I have two computers networked through a Netgear router. They both
have XP Professional SP2. The Internet is shared fine, and I ran the
XP wizard for setting up a simple home network, and both belong to the
"MSHOME" network. I did reboot both afterwards.

The hard drives I want to be able to share are shared, you see the
little hand "cradling" the entire hard drive. When you right-click and
select "Security and Sharing," the "Share this Folder on the Network"
is checked.

But, when you browse to the network on the other machine, you will see
the other computer popup under "MsHome," but when you try and browse
the computer, it rejects you, saying "you don't have permission."

What simple setting am I missing?

It could be that a registry entry that allows browsing the computer
has the wrong value. Run the registry editor (Start | Run | regedit)
on each computer and open this key:

HLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA

Set the value of RestrictAnonymous to 0. Reboot and try accessing the
computer again.

If that doesn't solve the problem, create matching user accounts on
both computers: same user name and password.

I am having the same problem. I just bought a new computer with XP
professional and on my old computer, I can see the computer in the workgroup,
but I cannot access it, and the shared files are not in the networkplaces On
the new computer I do not see any of the computers in the Network Places
(there are three in total)

I finally got mine to work! I did could not find the path that steve
suggested but I did find a thread with this path that I did have (below)
however, I also realized that my new Norton software required that I listed
the computer names on the network... so either of those could have been it!

I suggested the same path:

HLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA

"HLM" is an abbreviation for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE".

I'm glad that you got it to work. Thanks for reporting the result.
