Can RDP Audio be disabled?...more info inside...please read

I want to use a second PC with a professional audio card
using 24bit-192kHz for audio playback. Before
establishing the Remote Desktop connection, I make sure
that the setting "Remote computer sound" is set to "Leave
at remote computer". Then when I connect, RDP Audio is
the only audio device to choose from. To make it clear,
I don't want to redirect any audio or use the virtual
audio device, RDP Audio. I only want to control the
second PC and be able to use its audio hardware.

Is this possible? If so, can you help me to do it?

Also, I want to use Remote Desktop between WinXP PCs. I
would like to avoid options such as Remote Assistance or
Netmeeting.

Thanks

Not currently.. The implementation of RD in WinXP and Win2K3 Server
will force the use of the RDP Audio device.

Is it safe to assume that this will be rectified
eventually? This mandatory use of RDP Audio is the only
thing holding back Remote Desktop for me--otherwise it
would be excellent.

The problem relating to audio redirection is supposed to be fixed in
XP SP1, but this isn't exactly what you are looking for... I'm not
sure if they will support using a non-virutal audio driver or not...

Hope I have the understanding from Agnishvatta correct as
it sounds familiar to me. I have a pc with a newly
installed Creative Audigy 2 Platinum Ex kit on it. I
have hooked it to the home sound system and wish to play
my recorded WMA CD's from a remote pc/laptop. I used
Remote Desktop successfully with the machine, setting the
audio to remain at the host. Everything worked until I
installed the new sound card. Now, no matter what
setting in the rds logon page, the host displays no audio
device in the control panel applet. I can log into the
machine locally and it works fine. Is there a registry
value somewhere that is giving the remote client wrong
information? I upgraded to XP pro for this specific
purpose, would be nice to get it working again.

Thanks,
ed

I'm hoping someone has a solution to my problem. Here are some details of
the problem that I'm experiencing...

I have a Shuttle SV25 that I want to use as a "headless" media server, for
audio file streaming/storage accessable by other computers in my home, and
audio devices.

The problem I encounter is that the audio device is not loading properly
unless I connect locally to the machine prior to a RDC. If I login via RDC
prior to logging in locally, the audio control panel shows all options
grayed out, even though the device drivers say they are loaded correctly.
No audio devices appear in the control panel. If I connect locally, then
without logging out locally, connect via RDC, the sound works fine. This
defeats the purpose of wanting the machine to be "headless", as I need it to
live in a location where a monitor/keyboard/mouse is not feasable to attach
every time I reboot the box.

I've noticed on a few other groups online that other people have experienced
this issue, though most just make sure they log onto the remote box locally
first as a workaround. For me, this is an unworkable solution.

Can anyone point me to a better explanation of the cause of this issue, and
how I might work around it? I've tried using both onboard sound and a
SBLive card, both with the same result.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

RDP using the host audio device and not the RDP audio device

You have either figured this out by now, found a different workaround or given up, but for anyone else having this issue...

you can logon to the server using the /admin switch for RDP which in essence connects you to the console of the physical server:

From a command prompt (or start run) type:
mstsc /admin

enter your server name

select options, and then the 'local resources' tab and make sure the sound option is configured as 'leave at remote computer'

when you do this, you will see the physical audio device and not the RDP Audio device..
