Can not enter my password at bootup

I have a laptop computer. Running WindowsXP, SP3, all updates current.
Yesterday I installed 2 plugins for paintShop Pro, and began using the
program as well as the newly installed plugins. Late last night I shut the
computer off and went to bed. This afternoon I came home, and turned the
computer on. It booted up to the logon screen where you type in your
password, But, as I type my password, the cursor does not move, and "no
text" is entered. I can not log onto the computer, so I can not do a restore
or get into Safe Mode or anything. Seems I am locked out. I also have an
external drive that has all my backups on it, but here again, I am locked
out of the computer. Maybe the registry got messed up or something, I don't
know. Does anyone have any ideas to help me out. I am the only one who uses
the computer, and the plugins were the only thing that I have installed
since the last Windows updates.

If by 'logon screen' you're referring to the Welcome screen, try hitting the
Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys twice. This should bring up the Log On to Windows
dialog where you should be able to enter your user name and password.

After the POST (power-on self test) screen appears but BEFORE Windows
begins to load, can you use the keyboard to get into your BIOS config
screens? Your laptop's manual will tell you what key to hit after the
POST to get into your BIOS setup.

Resetting a Forgotten Password


NOTES

- The built-in Administrator account is found on the
Welcome screen only if there are no other accounts
available, other than Guest, or when the computer is
booted into Safe Mode.
- To get Admin account on the "Welcome Screen" make sure
that there are no accounts logged in.
- The built-in Administrator account can create and
change passwords for all users, but cannot restore a
forgotten one.
- When a password is changed, that account will lose
all encrypted files, personal certificates and stored
Internet Explorer passwords or network resources.
- Press "CTRL-ALT-DEL" twice to get the classic Windows
logon box. Type: Administrator. If this account has a
password, enter it. Otherwise, leave the it blank.
- Recovering a password is much more difficult. Using
a cracking program can take weeks!


RESET A PASSWORD USING THE ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT

1. Boot into Safe Mode.
2. Log on using the built-in Administrator account.
3. Open: Control Panel -> User Accounts.
4. On the Users tab, select a user name, the password
to change and click Reset Password.

account and input a new password. Too easy!

a new thread.

Point of Usenet etiquette: Don't change the Subject header (other than
