Can no longer associate files??

I've just noticed that I can no longer associate programs with file types
TXT, ZIP, and a few others. They show they are associated with nothing and
any attemps to associate them with anything does nothing. When I double
click on such files I get something like "Network path not found". All
files and all programs are on the local disk.

Any suggestions? This just started in the last few days. Nothing has been
installed in the interm. I deleted a lot of useless associations but that
didn't help. Also, the 'Delete' button is greyed out for these
associations. When trying to re-associate, I get some file type like
"F000001" or some such.

It looks like you may have some registry corruption. File association
information is stored in: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, each file type will have their
own key. Try deleting the keys (export them first, just in case) and have
then re-associate the files with their applications.
....Alternatively, you could copy the keys from a working machine
