Can I run Vista without symtdi.sys

Windows Vista Home Basic

I'm trying to get Firefox to run but it doesn't. IE does work. I've
posted these thresds to no avail. EnumProcess flags a Symantec system
file symtdi.sys http://www.file.net/process/symtdi.sys.html
I want to re-name it, and then restart, but I think I should ask
first. Is Vista going to run without this file?

This is a copy of my last post on the Firefox problem:

I can't figure this one out. I can use IE without a problem. I can
ping too. But Fx won't load a page, even when I run Fx in Firefox's
safe-mode. I'm about to try runing in Windows Safe mode.

I've ran EnumProcess and the results are at the mozilla link above. I
didn't see anything suspicious.

But the strangest thing is that I installed Opera, and that didn't
work either. So it's apparently not a Fx problem.

Vista will run without the file, but the Symantec software may not load
properly. This could cause additional problems. I would remove or disable
the Symantec software to see if it corrects the problem with firefox.

Hi,

That's why I stated that you should disable or remove the Symantec software,
not rename the file. The software is likely integrated into the browser, and
when part of it fails to load it takes the browser with it.

Fx now works. The other browsers work as well. I un-installed Norton
Security.

Enumprocess flagged SYMTDI, but when I deleted it by itself, IE wasn't
connecting just like Fx. It seemed to only way to safely delete SYMTDI
was to uninstall the entire Norton Security - SYMTDI is part of Norton/
Symantec Security.

I un-installed the entire Norton Security. I hesitated to do this
because I've had Norton all along and it didn't previously interfere
with Fx. Also, when the new version of Fx didn't work, I un-installed
Fx and then downloaded and installed an old version of Fx. I couldn't
even get a old version of Fx to work.

Apparently, if you have SYMTDI.sys, the old version of Fx will work.
But then when you upgrade Fx to the latest version, Fx will fail to
work. Moreover after the upgrade, even old versions of Fx won't work.
The upgrade does something, perhaps to Norton, that isn't reversed
when you un-install.

I'm now using AVG free for the virus killer.
