Can a nearby refrigerator affect PC performance?

No they are usually cowards at heart.

That's a very idealistic notion you have there, but it
doesn't seem to pan out. I can only assume you're very
young and advise you to think long and hard about this...
the older you get, the less likely a bully is this "coward"
you presume and more likely they'd been punched a time or
two but didnt' stop.

Only in the opinion of ill informed people.

Nope, check out the Usenet FAQ all over the 'net.
If nothing else, check the majority of posts in this group.
You are simply wrong and your ego prevents accepting it...
yet another lesson you'll need to learn in life.

Your wrong, they only do it if they think they can get away with it.
They just haven't been punched by me yet.

There is nothing wrong with top posting.

Untill you can prove otherwise I suggest you save your breathe.

Good luck then, one can only hope you never come across
someone that doesn't *melt* from a single punch.

Top posting goes against the flow of the threat. Each thread is archived
and when you are surching for information it is easier to follow if it flows
like any document. From top to bottom. Top posting disrupts this. The people
that fail to understand and abide by this are considered rude. Take it for
what it is worth.

I have a PC with terrible performance that defies troubleshooting. I
may be grabbing a straws here, but the PC shares a wall (and electrical
circuits) with a refrigerator - could that have any impact?

Performance issue is ridiculously slow to process - logging on, opening
files, opening applications. The reason I am wondering about
environment issues is because we even replaced this computer with a new
machine and the symptoms persist. The user is not a flake, she is not
loading "stealth" stuff on her machine or exposing the PC to malware.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks - Mandygal
Yes you can get interference from appliances but usually they are random and
not a continuous problem. As someone else has suggested, temporarily
unplugging the refrigerator might rule it out as the problem.

Invest in one of those little three prong outlet testers from a place like
Home Depot. You can get them for around 8 bucks or even cheaper at times.
With that you can verify that the outlet and or outlet strip are wired
correctly. I have run into UL approved outlet strips with hot/ground
reversed among other problems. Just because the computer lights up and
tries to run does not indicate the outlet is/was wired correctly.

The worst problem I had to track down was when an office network would go
down randomly. It proved to be a soft drink machine in one room was
sharing the circuit breaker with a network switch in another room. Only if
someone purchased a Diet Coke would the network go down. Seems that the
solenoid that dropped just that one drink flavor was arcing which caused
enough electrical interference to crash the switch.

No most of them melt at the threat of a single punch, you don't
even actually have to hit them, as soon as they realise they are just as
likely to have my knuckles crashing into their face as opposed
to vice versa they suddenly decide to make a sharp exit from
the situation because they know when my fist slams into their
face it is really going to hurt them and bullies get their kicks
from inflicting pain on others not receiving it them selves.
And speaking from experience I know around half a dozen
'hard men' bouncers who have arrived at this conclusion
despite their obvious lack of intelligence.
Yea I know a lot of 'hard men' who suddenly ain't so hard
when you stand up to them, and any bouncer who has laid more
then a finger on me has never been seen on the door again, I
know because I have looked for them.

Thats just not true unfortunately, top posts are much easier
to read because the post can be read with just oe click on
the post in most newsreaders, certaintly OE the most widely
used.
To read a thread of say 3 top posts requires just 3 clicks
(and a tiny movement of the mouse between clicks).
To read 3 bottom posts requires all of the above *plus*
a long movemen of the mouse to the post preview window
followed by a long dwonward drag of the mouse whilst holding
the mouse button down, you then have to locate the start of the
post. After that you then have a big mouse movement back up
to the next post in the thread and then try to figure out which
post is actually the next post (especially if the post has already
been read before).
In all I would say it takes about 10 times more effort and time.

I really don't see why I should waste my tme, life and energy to
suit people who for some reason wish to use the most
inefficient method of posting, I have better things to do.

Yes a lot of people are not very intellligent but a little educatioin
would not do them any harm would it, they would soon make up the
time they lost in educating themselves in faster post reading.

Don't bother arguing with this troll, as you can see by looking
back over this thread. Just plonk it and get on with life.
