Camera Problem

I bought a Kodak digital camera. When I plug it into the usb port and turn
it on, Windows xp pops up a "Found New Hardware" "Kodak Easyshare Camera"
window and then starts up the driver install wizard. I have tried repeatedly
to get it to install the drivers for tranfering photos, but it allways fails
with "Problem installing digital still camera". I have pointed the install
to the Kodak CD and to the WinXP install CD. Same results. Any ideas???

You may want to consult the manual or the manufacturer's Tech support
since some devices require to install the driver/s prior to plug-in.

I already did and they said to use the windows wia driver. There is a wia
folder on my XP startup disk, but it still won't install when I point the
usb hardware install at it.

It's up to the installation routine to install all necessary drivers
and when the manufacturer's poor installation software fails, it's not
the user's job to install all of the necessary components manually.

This should start the transfer wizard: Start > Run: wiaacmgr.exe
If this is not the case, call the Tech support again. Check also with
the manual if the camera creates a virtual drive. If this is the case,
there is no need for any wizard. In order to transfer the photos, just
copy/move the picture files from that drive to the target folder (hard-
disk) using the Windows Explorer. Good luck.

I tried what you suggested, both with the camera on and off. I got a window
that said "Cannot detect camera", "go to Control Panel/Scanners and Cameras
and select Add Device". I tried it but it does nothing. Explorer does not
show it at as a device so I cannot access it with Explorer.

Driver problems and poor third-party support have nothing to do with
Windows. If the Tech support cannot help you, return the camera to the
vendor and purchase a different model/brand.

Personally, I would use a card reader - assuming your camera doesn't have
internal memory you're using rather than a memory card. It's quicker to use
a card reader, doesn't require loading camera drivers (which can be a
problem as you have found), and won't eat into your camera's battery power.
