Camera as mass storage device not as generic camera

Ok so I know what my mistake was, I installed Windows XP sp 2.

My camera used to open as a mass storage device with a drive letter, and
now teh windows 'scanner and camera' wizard tries to open it , which doesn't
work. I even renistalled my camera specific drivers disk.

I just want to be able to open my camera as a mass storage device as before.
I hate this 'autoplay' rubbish.

So how do I get pc to open camera as it used to?

Also can I switch off autoplay, I never use it.

I have 800 pictures on my camera from my recent architectural fieldtrip I
need to process by Monday, I have battled with the pc all today to try and
solve this, so help sincerely appreciated.

Go to Start/Help and Support. In the Search box type Install camera, then
click the arrow. Select full text search. Select Install scanner or digital
camera. The Wizard will help you do the rest.

Sorry, I meant to suggest that you first uninstall the camera, using Control
Panel/Add and Remove programs. Then reinstall it as I described.

Not a direct answer to your question, but---
Get a USb card reader (cheap) and use it instead of your camera. Just
pop the memory card out of the camera and plug it in to the card reader.
It won't consume battery power from your camera, and you won't have to
perch your camera in a perhaps precarious position near the computer.
Also, there have been a few horror stories about a camera's internal
software being damaged when something goes wrong with the download.

Hi Milt,
Thanks for the advice, actually that was the first thing I tried this
morning, well almost first, I shouted at the computer for some time first of
all. And no that doesn't work. I tried it again just now. Windows recognises
it as a Fuji S7000, but then fails as it is trying to get pictures off it.
Previously it has just opened as drive letter- X (can't remember what letter
I assigned to it). I don't need the computer to know what camera I have, I
just need it to recognise teh mass storage device.

Do you know if this is a plug and play issue that installing SP2 has
reactivated for me? You know what it is like you make amendments to your pc
over time and forget what you have switched off and on.

Sorry, but i can't answer your question. However, I do have another
suggestion. In the area where I live, you can go into any Walgreens, Osco,
Costco or camera store and put your camera's memory card into their printer.
Then you can make a CD, DVD or print your pictures or or even make proof
sheets on the spot and immediately. That's not what you asked about, but it
is a quick way to get at your pictures. If you make a CD or DVD, you can take
that back to your computer and access them too.

Thanks for the suggestion guys but you see that is just not the point. There
is no reason why the computer won't do what it happily did a week ago, and I
shouldn't have to go out and buy new hardware to solve a software problem.

I can't disagree with you, but if your object is to have immediate access to
your photos, Allenss suggestion or mine will do what you need. Then at your
convenience you can straighten out the problem.

Have you tried contacting Fuji? They may be able to guide you through your
problem.

So do a system restore and take your pc back to an earlier time when it did
what you wanted.

Here are a few things I would try. None of them have to work, as these
options might not be available:

- If the camera is shown in My Computer, right-click, click Properties,
and if has the Customize, or Autoplay tab, change the folder type, or
method of loading.

- Look in Device Manager and remove the camera, or attempt to change the
device type. Try the same thing in the Control Panel; remove, or change
its type.
