Camcorder not recognized

My computer (hp media pc with windows xp media edition) does not recognize my sony dv camcoder thru Firewire, only thru USB 2.0, do I need some special driver for it to recognize my camcorder thru Firewire?? Somebody, please help!

I used a Sony DV Camcorder on Windows 98SE and it worked fine with the
standard drivers. Are you using the stock or Sony drivers ? Also....do not
use a generic Firewire cable, they do not seem to work with any Sony
products, you have to use the Sony cables (or so I have heard and my Belkin
Cable did not work)
