Calling all Windows Pros (Scandisk and MP3's)

All right.....

Let's start with my spec's
Windows 2000 Pro with service pack 4 and all available windows updates
My C: Drive is a Maxtor 100 gig
My D: Drive is a Maxtor 160 gig
My E: Drive is a Maxtor 120 gig

I use the D and E drive for storing all of my MP3 audio.

After booting up my system over the weekend, Windows stated it needed to do
a scan disk on one of my storage drives. I was given an option to cancel but
Windows suggested that I allow the drive to scan. Due to time restrains I
opted to cancel the Scan Disk. After working with my system for an hour or
so I needed to reboot due to updating some of my applications. I walked away
to grab a drink...and when I returned Windows was in the middle of a Scan
Disk on my drive. Rather than causing issues and killing the scan I allowed
it to do it's thing. This was only the beginning....

I dj using mp3's on our company's radio station. After setting up for my
nights broadcast I was previewing some of my tracks and quickly became
horrified.

This is what I've found I have a track Linkin Park - Breaking The Habit.mp3
This file was fine before I did the Scan disk....Now When I play back the
file in any Mp3 play back application i.e. Windows Media player 9, PCDJ Red,
WinAmp, Music Match Realplayer and so on..This is what I get.

Example: The track mentioned above Linkin Park - Breaking The Habit.mp3 The
first 15 to 30 seconds will play the first part of the file...Then it
switches to YMCA for about 30 seconds or so....then Whoomp There it is plays
for a few seconds then you catch the last part of the track Breaking the
Habit. So now this one track is now 4 songs mixed together. I know this
sounds strange, I would not believe it if I did not see and hear it myself.
I would be happy to send this or any of the messed up files to any one that
may be able to help.

Now the major problem I have is that I have over 86,000 mp3 audio tracks.
The only way for me to tell which ones are now unusable is to listen to each
one. Please tell me some one else has run into this issue and has a fix????

And where do you keep yr backups?
Perhaps you should look for a hd checking utility on the maxtor site.

I don't see this as a Maxtor Hard drive issue. The issue as mentioned in the
post happend after the scan disk. This is clearly a Windows issue. Does any
one else have any suggestions?

Sorry DL I should have explained further. The way Windows stores a file is
in bits an bytes....right? This information can be stored or scattered on a
hard drive. If a file is corrupt Windows will replace the bad data. Now
during a scan disk windows searches for the files or missing information.
Thus creating the Found0000 Folder on the drive that was scanned. During
this scan is it possible that the scan could have miss read the data and
replaced it with the wrong info?

You have to hear what I'm talking about to truly understand why I feel
that this is a Windows caused error rather than a HD cause error.

Again thanks for all the help....still looking for a resolution.

The file can be corrupted by hd errors, at least using the Maxtor, free,
utility would give a pretty deffinative answer and allow you to rule this
out.
If scan disk found file errors it would have produced a report.
I have seen a similar problem, when using I recollect an old version of
Norton Utilities, in this case various data file names were changed eg
junereport.doc became $3nerport.doc in this instance it was fairly simple to
recover manually. I have however had to resort to disk editor software to
recover clusters that have their 'file names' altered, in order that the
origonal file be recovered - it was a very!!!! long process.
If this data is important to you, you need to make a clone - not backup- of
the hd's and work on the cloned disks.

DL,
Thanks for getting back to me. I've been posting these questions on
sevral mp3 related message boards and have found that a large number of
individuals have expierenced this same issue with other hard drives. Let's
just rule the hard drive out for now. What were the applications that you
used to recover and fix the issues that you encounterd? I guess this leads
back to the old stand by...back up, back up, Back up!

Thanks again for all the help!

I used a version of Norton tools that included a disk editor.
This was some years ago. There are a number of disk editor tools available,
I dont have any specific reccommendations.
I was working on a floppy disk, that had a very buggered up word.doc of some
80pages, the disk wasnt readable in win, and allthough the file was small it
took me most of the day!!
The other option is a paid for recovery service eg ondata, though they are
one of the dearer
