Cable DSL Hookup Problem

The cable guys came in and hooked up their stuff to enable cable dsl. The
tech said that the equipment only worked with a hard wire connection to the
computer, but that the network connections window only showed a 1345
connection - not the one he usually saw. He said that it looked like I was
missing a file that enables the hardwire LAN connection. I did windows xp
update, but it said that nothing needed updating. Any ideas?

Likely the Motherboard based Ethernet NIC (Network Interface Card)
is disabled in BIOS setup. Most all PCs now come pre-configured with
an on-board NIC or multiple NICs. Look at the back panel of the PC.
You should see what appears to be a larger form of the standard phone
or RJ socket ( with more pins than a modem/phone line ). You can also
check the existence of Wired NICs from Device Manager, Network
Adapters category. Usually they will appear as something similar to
"Intel(R) Pro 10/1000 VE Network Connection". Make sure the device(s)
aren't shown with a Red X or Yellow exclamation point preceding them.
