I am frustrated and ready to give up. This message won't go away, no matter
what. I have already done a "system restore" to free myself from this
download error but to no avail. When I update my computer it is back on.
This is what happens: It is an update from Windows I believe, and it has a
box on the desktop that is a download install box. It says: "the feature you
are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to
try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation
package. 'Fax.msi' in the box below. Then the options is:
c:\hp\tmp\src\aio\setup\fax\ and/or browse. Browse is the same as
this:c:\hp\tmp\src\aio\setup\fax\. when I click OK then it tries to
"configure" and then says: "The path 'c:\hp\tmp\src\aio\setup\fax\\Fax.msi'
cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again,
or try to find the installation package 'Fax.msi' in a folder from which you
can install the product Fax." only option is OK or the red X
I didn't try downloading this FAX and I don't know what to do. Can anyone

1. Nobody is going to email you a response, and posting your correct
email address is an invitation to spammers.

2. What do you mean by "when I update my computer it is back on"? Do you
mean that the message re-appears when you re-boot? Or something else?

3. In any event, this is not (likely) caused by a Windows Update but by
an incomplete install of the Fax program associated with your hp
all-in-one printer.

4. Try re-installing the hp software using the CD that came with your
printer or (especially if you didn't just get the printer) download the
software package from hp.com

happened. When I restored my computer, it went back to a date previous to
the "download error". When the computer decided to do its updates, thats
when the error message came back. I have not recently downloaded my
printer/fax machine. I am frustrated. and yes.. every time I turn off my
computer and start up again its back on.
What do you mean "download the software from HP." Are you talking about some
additional support from HP or from when I bought this thing about 5 yrs ago?

it does look like its from my printer/fax machine... but it happened when
the Windows was doing its update.

Hi, Linda
Go to HP.com and go to the support page for your printer. The search box
usually works well to find that support page if you know the complete
printer model number. On that support page there should be a column for
product quick links, and an entry for software and driver downloads in that
column. The driver page should have a list of OSs for which HP has drivers
for this model of printer. Microsoft's auto updates sometimes downloads
drivers that are not the best. Getting the drivers directly from the
manufacturer is generally the best way to go.

When you say that your computer decided to do its updates, do you mean
Windows Updates or updates from someplace else (like HP)? If from
Windows Updates, do you know which ones were downloaded? If not, go to
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
and click on the link at the left to "Review your update history."
List the updates from the last time.

You should never download any of the hardware/driver updates from
Windows Update.

When I suggested downloading from hp, what I mean is:
1. Go to http://www.hp.com/#Support
2. Select the radio button to "Download drivers and software (and firmware)"
3. Enter the name (model) of your printer and click "Go"
4. Select Windows XP as your operating system
5. Pick the appropriate package and download it. I can't tell you which
is the appropriate package because you haven't identified your printer.

Before you reinstall the software, however, one thing you might try is
to download Autoruns from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
Unzip the file and put the resulting folder somewhere where you'll be
able to find it.
Double click on autoruns.exe
The "Everything" tab should be selected by default. If not, select it.
Look for a line that includes "c:\hp\tmp\src\aio\setup\fax\"
There is a find function (File > Find). If you use this, look for "Fax"
without quotes. You'll have to select the line below any line that
"Find" goes to in order to find the next instance.

If you do find an entry with your irritating string in it, just uncheck
the box on the left and it won't bother you again.

Be careful with Autoruns. It's a powerful tool. The good thing about it,
however, is that if you uncheck something and want it back, just run
Autoruns again and re-check it.

reinstall the disk. I hope this helps.
