Bypass Startup Screen - XP Pro SP2

How do I bypass the startup screen on boot where I have to select the
user? There is only one user (me) and I am the Administrator. I
don't have a guest account set up. I have another computer with XP
Pro that boots directly to Windows. Can't remember what I had to do
to that one. Modify the Registry?

Dick,

You probably have a password set up with your login, so Windows has to stop
at the login screen to await your password input. Sijnce you are the only
user, and you seem willing to bypass the login screen, you can go to Control
Panel > User Accounts > select your account > select "Create a password", and
remove your password by entering a blank as your new password. Since you will
no longer have a password, XP will no longer have a reason to stop at the
login screen.

There are also lots of utilities (some free, some not) that allow you to set
up a "default login user", and if you set up yourself as the default login
user, Windows will bypass the login and go right into that user's (your)
account.

If you are the only User with or without password then try this:

1. Click Start - Run - type Control Userpasswords2
2. From the User List select the user you want to Auto Login.
3. Uncheck the box "User must enter a user name password...."
4. You will be prompted to enter the User Name and Password for the user
name you want to auto login. Enter the password if any otherwise leave it
blank.
5. Apply the changes and restart your PC.

Hope this help, let us know!

To add to the other posts, hopefully you are not using the built in
Administrator account. That account should not be used for day to day
activities. If something corrupts it you won't be able to login. Create
another account with admin privileges, login to it at least once, then copy
the data and settings from the Administrator account to it (see below link).
Assign a strong password to the Administrator account and set it aside to be
used if there is a problem with the working account.

When another admin level account is created the Administrator account is
hidden. To login to it for XP Pro at the Welcome Screen do Ctrl-Alt-Del
twice, then type in Administrator as user name and the password. For XP
Home boot into safe mode and the Administrator account will appear on the
Welcome Screen.
