Ashampoo I use and find it an excellent software.
Its not free but does have a trial. Its alot cheaper than Nero though if
you do decide to buy it.

If your ver7 key is legit, google nero 7 lite, it's basically just nero
burning rom and express but it works well for me with rc1.

Roxio 9 is out. I have it installed on RC1 and it installed fine. Now I am
going to do a burn test. Keeping my fingers crossed :)

Have you tried all the components of Roxio 9? Do they all work? Does Roxio
state Vista is a supported OS? I'm surprised they would issue a Vista
compatible program before the final Vista was released. Hope it doesn't
"break" with any changes that may be made between now and the final release!
I've been using Vista's native burning and it works fine, so far, but the
disk isn't always readable in other operating systems...and of course, it
doesn't have support for video editing, etc.

"only" the main components are working (creator classic + iso reader +++)
but not video editing etc.
After installation (which works without any problems) you have to apply a
reg hack to avoid the registration popup - if you do not apply this no app
of the roxio suite will start.
They state compatabilty to the current Vista build and that there might be
some updates to get the full comp...

I'm using Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5 Plus, it can author DVDs and has programs
for copying, burning DVDs/CDs and ISOs. Works fine in Vista RC1
