Bugs with SP2

Hi All,

I've just rolled back SP2 because of a bug that just
wouldn't go away. Whenever I tried to use shortcuts keys
on the desktop (eg. ctrl-v;c etc.) or when I tried to use
the right click context menu explorer.exe would always
throw an error (access violation (0x01b7415b) trying to
write to 0x00000000). Immediately after rolling back SP2
the problem went away. Is there a fix for this? Is it
another program that is clashing with SP2 which causes it?
I've also got questions about SP2 and MS ActiveSync (I've
got some funny stuff going on with my PDA).

Aside from that I have been quite happy with SP2 - it
acknowledged my firewall and AV programs very nicely and
worked well with them (ie. the MS firewall didn't turn on
automatically as it knew I had one).

What are other people's thoughts on this? Has anyone had
the same problem as mine?

This is not a bug with SP2. There was a problem on YOUR computer that
resulted in the behavior you described. You cannot blame it on a "bug" or
everyone would have it. You post is the only one I have seen that describes
the problem you had. Therefore, it is safe to say that the problem was
unique to your situation...and not a bug.

I cannot say that I have seen that particular problem reported anywhere
else. Perhaps SP2 was not the problem, but exposed the problem on your
system?

I have DivX installed on all of my computers (5 at home, 23 at work), and I
have yet to see this problem on any of them. I'm afraid that if it came
down to a choice of uninstalling DivX or SP2, SP2 would lose.

I had a similar problem with context menus. The problem
was Dr Divx. Take a look at this link which gives details
of a temporary fix. The execution protection added in SP2
causes the problem:

Some of the free DivX players appear to be trying to corner the market in
spyware, and some are better behaved. I'd suspect the poorly behaved ones
are installing crud thats causing a lot of problems.

Bobby,

it is the Dr DivX encoder that causes this problem, not the DivX
player. The makers are aware of the problem and will come out
with a corrected version.

Please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm for
details.

I have the paid PRO version of DivX 5.3 installed...the encoder and not the
player. I hate the player. I have had DivX 5.3 Pro installed since it was
available. (And I do mean the Encoder).

Bobby,

I don't know the stuff. Only thing I know is that the problem is
specific to "Dr DivX". The actual culprit is the version of
encodedivxext.dll that comes with Dr DivX.
