Hi,

I have installed:
Windows Vista 5600 64-Bit
Running on:
AMD Sempron 64 1.8GHz
1GB RAM
7200RPM 250GB SATA drive
nVidia 128MB 5200FX graphics ( Aero capable ).

When unzipping the Eclipse 3.2 ZIP file ( http://www.eclipse.org ), the
machine load goes up to 80%, and stays there for almost half an hour. Which
really can't be considered normal for a 130MB ZIP file, where the contents
are mostly stored, not compressed ( jar files ).

I timed the unzip operation on a FreeBSD machine:

Hardware Configuration:
Intel Pentium 3 Slot A 650MHz dual CPU
256MB RDRAM
160GB ATA 7200RPM drive on a ATA-4 controller
FreeBSD 6.0

$ time unzip -qq ../eclipse-SDK-3.2-win32.zip

real 0m18.740s
user 0m5.567s
sys 0m3.618s

This is vastly different from the half-hour or so Vista Build 5600 exhibits.

I see this too.. extracting a 6MB zip file from a network share takes 1 min
30 secs, normally it takes about 8 seconds. Copying the file locally takes 1
second, and extracting locally still takes longer than expected.. about 30
secs instead of 8. Definitely something really slow about the RC1 unzipper.

Also of interest: the unzipper's window's title bar is blank (even though
the toolbar shows a correct title)

5600 is way old get a new RC1 build

Hmm, there's a lot of references on the newsgroup here about RC2/5720,
definitely more recent.

But I just downloaded vista RC1 yesterday.. the main pages are all
advertising RC1 as the primary thing to download:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/get_it.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/

... the highlight on those pages as of this writing (Oct 19 2006) is for RC1:

Get Windows Vista RC1
Windows Vista Release Candidate 1 (RC1)

If there's an RC2, there's no mention of it on those pages.
Maybe RC2 is not available to mere mortals..?

If MS does want us to be testing RC2, it's not clear how we get at it.

The availability of RC2 was only for about 72 hours. You missed it.
Microsoft was looking for only 200,000 testers.

I was having the same problem with Vista RC2 x86 version. Just trying to
right click on a ZIP file would nearly lock up my computer for what seemed
like forever.

Then I temporarily disabled CA Anti-Virus and voila, my zip files were no
longer a problem.

Hope this helps someone else!
