BSOD on XP PC

alice

My XP PC was in the middle of doing updates, when it went to blue
screen-
KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
STOP 0x0000007A
atapi.sys

When I try to reboot, I get the Non System Disk or Disk Error message.
There is no floppy drive on this sytem. I can't seem to get into safe
mode, can't even get the option. No matter what keys I press, I either
get the BIOS or the option to boot from various drives, but that's it.
Is there any thing I can do at this point besides replace the HD?

It may help if you provide the parameters of the bugcheck error.

Common Causes of STOP Messages 0x00000077 and 0x0000007A
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/130801/

The error can be caused by a bad disk. You can try running a chkdsk
from the Recovery Console to see if it can fix things. At the Recovery
Console issue the following command:

Chkdsk /r

Be warned that there is always a riks of loosing files when running chkdsk.

If you have added a large HDD, this could be the problem, also you need to
change the Data/Ribbon Cable from 40 wires to 80 wires or from ATA66/ATA133
If I remember correctly! read the article below.

Error Message "Stop 0x0000007A" Occurs During Setup on an ATA66-based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275149

BIOS manufacturers should not clear the IDE Decode Enable bit in the _STM
ACPI method
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913379
Check the Health of the HDD by running the Diagnostic Tools from the HDD
manufacturer website and run the System File checker (SFC) to repair any
corrupt/damaged system files.

Chkdsk /r

Doing this gives an error-
the specified drive is not valid, or there is no disk in the drive.

When you started the Recovery Console did it see the Windows
installation and ask you to select an installation to log on to? It
doesn't sound too good. Can you mount the disk in another Windows XP
computer and see if it is accessible?

It was not able to find the previous installation. At this time I'm
not able to put the drive in another PC. But I think the drive is
completely dead. It's as if in the middle of windows updates, the HD
just instantly vanished.

At the Recovery Console you can try to run a chkdsk /r on the drive.
Chkdsk is one of the commands that can be run from the Recovery Console
without logging on to the Windows installation. Other than that you can
download and run a disk diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer.
