BSOD during upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro

Had troubles off the bat when the upgrade wouldn't continue - message said
the files on the computer were newer than the CD. Discovered it was because
I had SP2 on it. Unistalled SP2 and was able to start the upgrade. Problem
came during the first reboot when I got the BSOD and this STOP error:

Stop 0x00000024 or NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM

I've rebooted many times, run CHKDSK /F /R, used the restoration disk for
Home Edition - always the same result. Seems I may ahve a problems with the
NTFS.sys system file.

Is there anything short of a complete disk wipe and reinstallation that I
can do to fix this?

I think I screwed up, and need some help from the readers of this group.

Got a copy of technet article from an IT shop who just installed our SBS
2K3 server. Rather than take their advice (which was to take out the HD and
install it in a FAT32 PC and then follow some steps), I took the "easy way
out" by trying something I saw at the bottom of the email. I changed System
Setup to boot from the CD, and then tried to get to a point where I could
press R to repair/recover. Should have been easy, but I think the partial
upgrade installation of WinXP Pro messed things up. Only had 2 choices -
upgrade or full install (should ahve been my first clue). Got to a point
where it said it couldn't delete a bunch of files so I clicked OK a bunch of
times, and it then finally told me it wouldn't work, and to reboot. Did so
and decided to try the full install to see what messages would appear,
thinking I could always hit F3 at some point to get out of it. (Stupid me.)
Now I can't get to the OS, just get a black screen. I've got the PC running
a full diagnostic on the hard drive (F12 > #8 Boot to Utility). That'll
take awhile, and I don't really expect it to help. I'm hoping I can press
F8 to get to safe mode and then use my System Recover Setpoint to roll back
and help me breathe easier.

Any comments on what esle I can/should do?

Mike
