BSOD bad_pooler_call 0x000000c2 on XP setup

M

Marty

Hi all,

Can someone advise on the possible cause of the above when trying to
reinstall XP SP2 from a CD over an existing install?
It happens in the graphical setup screen where it shows the steps of
installation on the left side, during installing devices/hardware.
I've read through searches it could be ram or other hardware causing it.
It started basically because the PC would freeze up when loading IE7 and had
to be end-tasked. Then on hard reboot after it became
unresponsive windows just loaded to a white screen. Tried running SFC which
accessed the XP CD quite a bit replacing files.
Tried recovery console and chkdsk/r and that ran through but no improvement.

Any ideas on causes or possible fixes? I've read many horror stories about
this particular BSOD issue...

Many thanks in advance

Ca you please post a complete copy of the Stop Error report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the F8
key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure. Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure.
Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

BAD_POOL_CALLER;
STOP BAD_POOL_CALLER ( 0x???????, 0x???????, 0x???????, 0x???????, ).
What appears on the line below what is above?

Background information on Stop Error message
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms796120.aspx

BAD_POOL_CALLER2: BAD_POOL_CALLER
(A kernel-mode process or driver incorrectly attempted to perform memory
operations. Typically, a faulty driver or buggy software causes this.

Marty:
It's nearly impossible in our experience to determine (diagnose)
specifically what is causing these "BAD_POOL..." type of error messages. It
could be software-related; it could be hardware-related.

We generally take the position - at least at the outset - that if there's no
substantive evidence of a defective component, e.g., a failing HDD, that the
problem stems from a not-too-corrupted OS that (hopefully!) a Repair install
of the OS will correct.

I realize you've tried the sfc /scannow & chkdsk /r commands to no avail. So
those are not good signs.

Since you've indicated the problem started with some IE7 malfunction, did
you ever try uninstalling IE7? See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177
and reverting to IE6?

Or were there other problems with the system aside from the IE7 one?

In any event, perhaps you should try a Repair install of the OS in lieu of
the reinstall process from the XP installation CD accessed after the system
has booted. I assume you know how to undertake a Repair install by booting
directly to the XP installation CD. The process is not much different than
fresh-installing the OS but if it succeeds (which, of course, is not always
the case), all your programs & data will (in nearly all cases) be retained.

If you're unfamiliar with the process here are a few sites that have
detailed info on the process...

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=138
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341

As always, in cases like this it's *always* a good idea to copy any data
that is important to from your HDD to another destination, e.g., another
HDD, CD/DVD, flash drive, etc. *before* undertaking a Repair install of the
OS.

And in the meantime it probably would be wise to check out your HDD with a
diagnostic utility that you can (usually) download from the disk's
manufacturer.

What advice? I have only sought information in order to see whether I
can offer suggestions.

clear to another!
