Browsing problem between Win 98 and XP Home Edition

I have a Win98SE desktop and Win XP Home Edition desktop.
Both are connected to a broadband router device, which is
connected to a DSL modem. Both computers have internet
access and the Win98 desktop can view shares on XP
desktop. I can ping the Win 98 machine from the XP
addresse by name and IP address. I can not browse or
access shared folders on the Win 98 machine from the XP
machine.

Do you have the firewall enabled on Win XP? If so disable
it. (Go to Network Connections in Control Panel and right
click on the Local Area Connection icon. Choose properties
from the menu that appears. On the Advanced tab uncheck
the check box "Protect my computer...", etc.).

If you have a commercial firewall you must add the IP
address of the network computers to the list of trusted
addresses.

I had the same exact problem and after a few days of the groups I took a
look at my 98 machine. File and print sharing was working just fine prior
to the introduction of my XP machine. Come to find out I had disabled
sharing over TCP/IP on the 98 machine for security. The XP machine wants
TCP/IP so I enabled the 98 machine to share over TCP/IP and all is good.
For now I have disabled sharing until I figure out how to keep people on
the internet out. I am using a Linksys BEFSR41 Router, cable modem and
Norton Firewall. I hope this helps.
