Browser pop up, Media Player

I have contracted a virus probably from a JavaScript pop
up window which when I open a browser or close a browser
window opens another which then directs me to an adult
site or a mobile phone company web page. This happens
every time I open a browser window. I have also lost the
ability to use Windows Media player. I believe the two
problems are related. I have run Norton virus checker &
it cannot find a virus. Also on Windows XP home I cannot
find the Firewall option, do I have to install this from
disk as it is not in my Accessories-Internet options etc?
How can I get rid of the browser problem, get Media
player back & install the Firewall?
Regards.
Mac.

well...download spybot for the spyware on your system
safer-networking.org and update and scan on easy.
as for the firewall,it is in your connection
properties, advanced i think, using your administrator account.
and also download the critical updates from microfloppy as
there is one for the media player about it being hijacked
by some sites.

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.
