Since the cd drive is broken I cant install an av program from cd. Also this
machine cant connect to the internet so I cant run an online scanner.

I tried Stinger but it didn't find anything (I know something is lurking
there) - what other av can I run from floppy ?
thanks

Get a new drive ! They are cheap.

Stinger is NOT a cure all. Out of the 80K+ infectors Stinger only recognizes 3 dozen.

Please go to McAfee (http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp) and/or Trend
(http://housecall.antivirus.com ) and perform an online scan of your platform until you open
your wallet and spend a few dollars on a new CDROM drive, then report back your results.

$20.00 for a 24x IDE CDROM at JDR MicroDevices
http://www.jdr.com/interact/item.asp?itemno=CDROMI-24

I still remember $750.00 for SCSI CDROM drives.

Can you get access to a clean Win 9X/ME PC? If so, download the F-Pup
program from my web site on that clean PC and run FP-UP.exe. Then
prepare the emergency boot disk set on that PC for use on the ailing
PC. There will be a total of three disks including the boot disk.

To verify that I have the right files on the 3 floppies:
on disk 1 - av.001 & copyfp.bat
on disk 2 - av.002 & copyfp.bat
on disk 3 - carve.exe & unzip.exe
is this correct ?

To verify using them:
boot with disk 1 in a: drive & from the dos prompt copy the contents of all
three disks into a folder created on the c: drive
"copy A:\*.*_ c:\fprot" (or whatever i name it)

go to that dir and from the dos prompt

type "carve_/j av.zip" without the quotes of course (underscore denotes
blank space).
this rejoins the files
type "unzip_av.zip"

reboot to safe mode (by holding F8 key on reboot)

type "f-prot_c:\*.* (only use in safe mode)
there will be just keyboard commands (esc key & up/down arrows), no mouse.

i think i will need to open the write-protect tab to be able to boot from it
?

is this correct ?

Separate question - i noticed the trojfind.zip file on your site too - does
this just find trojans, right? Not 'deal with them' - i can manually delete
files it points out ?

thanks

You should see more files than just those on the boot disk.
To verify using them:
boot with disk 1 in a: drive

No. You boot with the boot disk in the drive.
& from the dos prompt copy the contents of all
three disks into a folder created on the c: drive
"copy A:\*.*_ c:\fprot" (or whatever i name it)

You just follow the directions on screen. The process is automated via
the copyf.bat file.
go to that dir and from the dos prompt

type "carve_/j av.zip" without the quotes of course (underscore denotes
blank space).

type "unzip_av.zip"

No. Again, the process is automated. Just insert the correct disks
when prompted.
reboot to safe mode (by holding F8 key on reboot)

No. You're booting via the boot disk. No safe mode involved.
type "f-prot_c:\*.* (only use in safe mode)
there will be just keyboard commands (esc key & up/down arrows), no mouse.

No.

No. It's a general purpose utility. You have to know the normal
processes and contents of registry keys, etc. on your PC so you can
look for unusual ones.

I redid the d/l and install onto a clean pc and everything worked well.
Files extracted, updated etc. I then prepare 3 formatted disks for the EBD
set to take to the ailing pc, and launched fp-up.exe and selected the menu
item, began the process & disk 1 (Boot Disk) worked well & I have the 13
required files on it. But then with the two other disks labelled av001 and
av002 - it starts copying av001 and on completion it immediately continues
with copying av002 - with no pause/prompt for the second disk to be
inserted. So I end up with av002 on both. What am I missing (other than
brains :) ?

What you're supposed to do is boot up the ailing PC with the boot disk
and simply follow the on screen directions, as I said. FP-UP.EXE is
not used at all in the emergency boot situation.

After booting up you will eventually see a screen prompt to insert
disk AVOO1. When that finishes, you'll get a prompt to insert disk
AV002. Then you'll get a prompt to insert the boot disk. Next, you'll
see a flurry of activity as the carved zip file is joined and unzipped
on the RAM drive. Then the F-Prot for DOS program will appear. Have it
scan your hard drive without doing any erasing or disinfecting at
first. See what it finds.

I apologise for the way i worded my last post - I did NOT launch fp-up on
the ailing pc. My description was poor.
My problem lies in the preparation of the three disks, to take over to the
ailing pc.
The first of the three (the bootdisk) is fine but the other two are botched
because the program keeps copying av001 and then av002 without a break for
me to insert the next disk. av002 overwrites av001 so i end up with only
av002

Success. I just started all over again and the copying of the 2 av files was
successful. Not sure why or what was different but.....thank you.
