In Access say you want create a brand new database and say you want to import
an excel file.

When you go File->Get External Data ->Import do you have Excel as an option
in "Files of Type"?

I only have "Microsoft Office Access", "Windows SharePoint Services", "XML",
and "ODBC Databases".

what am I missing?

I think you are missing the Microsofot Excel Application itself. You have an
option for importing from Microsoft Excel.

Thanks for the reply. I have the full Office 2003 Suite installed, including
Excel.

Have you tried to re-install Access?

IIRC there is a section in the install process which lets you choose what
import formats you want, I always select them all.

I figured it out - here's the text

Office 2003 is still only in beta, so information is a bit scant. In
earlier versions, this problem is usually fixed by re-registering the
ISAM driver files msexcl40.dll, msxbse40.dll, mspdox40.dll,
mstext40.dll (they should be in your Windows\System32 or WinNT\System32
folder). Assuming you find them, use regsvr32.exe to register them: you
can just drag and drop their icons (one at a time) onto the regsvr32.exe
icon.

You might want to update your notes. <g> Office 2003 was released over 3 and
a half years ago: Office 2007 was release earlier this year.
