Brain Teaser for the Xp Wizards

Hello, was hoping someone could help with a problem i've recently encountered with the picture viewer on my XP Home version computer. I use the picture viewer all the time to view pics i save directly to my desktop, but now i am unable to view any new, or existing pics from my desktop using the viewer. However, i can view my pics in any other folder using the viewer, except my desktop ?? - seems like the program is still working, but i may have inadvertantly deleted something i shouldnt have using the 'Regedit' feature ?
I''ve tried to re-load the viewer, and even removing, and then re-adding it, to no success. Have been thinking that maybe something is wrong with my desktop ?
When i typed regsvr32 shimgvw.dll , it came up with the following:- dllregister server in shimgvwdll succeeded ?? I've had a look at system restore, but i cant go back to the month of April ? - still out of luck !
Please, please help

Ok...you have a .jpg file on your desktop...
you double left click the .jpg file...
What happens?

Also, if you right click the .jpg file...can you
choose "open with" from the menu?

Hi John, thanks heaps for your reply
here's the story
when i double left click on a jpeg file on my desktop, windows picture and fax viewer opens, and 'no preview available' is displayed - this happens with pics of all types - same story when i right mouse click on a pic, i can choose windows picture and fax viewer, but the same thing happens - To annoy me even further, windows picture and fax viewer works fine in any folder, just not from my desktop. (this applies to all new and existing pics that are on my desktop
Do you think i may have deleted a registry key/string by mistake ? Really confused - hope you can help
(a simple answer would be 'just save your pics in folders, and view them thru there', but i'ts the principle of the matter, and i like doing things the way i always have :
Thanks in advance
Paul

Try typing in Start Run
regsvr32 shimgvw

I've seen this and I think that fixed it

Just tried it - still not working
i get a meassage that says it 'proceeded', but still cant open pics on my desktop with the pic viewer ??
Hope you can still help
Pau
:
P.s- Is it possible that i may have accidently deleted a registry key that is applicable with opening pics from the desktop ??

when i right click on a pic, the menu still allows me to open the picture with Windoes Picture and Fax Viewer, and the Internet, as per usual - when i do click on WP&FV the 'image screen' comes up, but 'No Picture Availalbe' is the message i get ?
I'm guessing that WP&FV isnt totally damaged, (because it still works perfectly from any folder), but i'm just lost as to why i cant open my pics from the desktop anymore
To fill you in a bit more, this problem happened at the beginning of the month (May), and i was unable to go to a previous save point and restore from a date in April
A friend has mentioned an 'Inplace upgrade' ?? , but i'm not that keen on doing a re-install, as such
I'm convinced its got to be a missing reg key or something ?
Hope you can still help me ??
Thanks
Paul

Hi John, i think you've hit the nail on the head - instead of transerring to a new profile, i logged on as a 'guest', and have found that Windows Picture and Fax Viewer works 100% correctly - (when double clicking pics from my desktop, they do open correctly in WP&FV

I guess this is the problem - i'll follows the link you gave me and give it a go - will i lose any information at all

Thanks alot for all of your help, guys
