picture and fax viewer problem/question

Hello, was hoping someone could help with a problem i've recently encountered with the picture viewer on my XP Home version computer
I recently removed what was possibly some kind of 'trojan' affecting my internet hompage (kept loading to a different page than the one i had chosen) - i followed the prompts on this screen to delete the infected home page 'trojan' - which invloved going into the 'Regedit' feature - this ultimately worked, but now an interesting problem has arisen. I use the picture viewer all the time to view pics i save directly to my desktop, but now i am unable to view any new, or existing pics from my desktop using the viewer. However, i can view my pics in any other folder using the viewer, except my desktop ?? To make matters more confusing, if i hold Ctrl and then open the pic on my desktop, 5 times out of 10 it will work, but then i have to repeat the process to view another pic
Hope you can help ! (seems like the program is still working, but i may have inadvertantly deleted something i shouldnt have using the 'Regedit' feature

Try the simple approach first.

Click START|RUN and type...

regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

<enter>

thanks heaps for the help, unfortunately, it hasnt worked. should i try and delete the program, then reload it ? (if so, how??), or can you recommend anything else

When i typed regsvr32 shimgvw.dll , it came up with the following:- dllregister server in shimgvwdll succeeded ?

I've had a look at system restore, but i cant go back to the month of April ? - still out of luck ! hope you can help !
