Bootable DOS Partition

B

Bill Bradshaw

I have an MSDOS program that I still need to run. It uses Int 13 calls in
some of the assembly language routines and until I get a chance to rewrite
it I am going to need to be able to boot to DOS.

I have Partition Magic 8.01 to work with.

I will have to put DOS (6.22) in partition F. My current bootup selections
are WinXP and Recovery Console. I would like to be able to add MSDOS to
that list of choices.

Anybody know where I can get a guide for dummies to help me through this
process?

In order to install and boot DOS 6.22, the active primary partition
must be formatted FAT16.

Since it appears you are going to try to use the Windows Boot Loader, then
the "C:\" partition containing the boot sector, ntldr, boot.ini and
ultimately the command.com, io.sys, msdos.sys, autoexec.bat, config.sys will
need to be "FAT16" also, as DOS 6.22 can't read NTFS or FAT32. When
multibooting, the primary partition must be formatted at the lowest common
format in which all OS's involved can read, as all the boot files for all
the OS's reside there and are used until the computer knows where the rest
of the OS is located and to be loaded from.
It may be easier to a) use a virtual machine software to load DOS 6.22 into,
or b) use a 3rd party boot manager capable or reading both NTFS, FAT16 and
FAT32, I believe Partition Magic has one.
