Boot up problem

I run XP sp3 with all updates installed.

When I boot my computer it tries to install a "FAX" program. But can't find
it. It does this 3 times and each time I have to cancel it.

I do have a fax program installed as part of my HP officejet all in one.

Where can I look to stop this procedure? I've run registry cleaners to no
avail.

Any help appreciated.

"I've run registry cleaners to no avail." That's not a good idea!

Start, Control Panel, Add / Remove Programs, Windows Components, scroll
down the list and uncheck Fax Services, click on Next and follow the on
screen
instructions. You will need to restart the computer to complete
removal.

Use Disable not the Delete option to be safe and sure you have got the
right entry.

To identify what loads when you boot use Autoruns (freeware from
Microsoft).
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from
starting,or you can right click an item and then delete it. If you
uncheck you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer
approach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig..
Another useful feature of the programme is that you can right click an
item and select Search Online to get information about the item
selected.

Gerry,

I haven't checked it yet but I found the fax lines in Autoruns and cleared
the 2 boxes. I'll try it tomorrow.

Many Thanks,

Ok. I rebooted this morning and the extended fax install attempt was gone
but there was still one attempt instead of 3.

Thanks for your help.

Please change the name you're using. It's using OE's glitch of
defaulting the newsgroup name, even if you put a name in first. It's
"the way" OE works unfortunately.

Can't help with the other problem I'm afraid - sorry.

Can you put into your next message exactly what the message says and
what are your clickable options?

This will help eliminate trying to guess what it says.

Ok I've changed the name. Sorry about that. I missed it before.

Ok to answer the messages replies I've gotten to date.

Before I was getting 3 attempts to install a fax program every time I
booted. After acting on the advice that was given to me here the number of
times it tried to install a non existent fax program was reduced to one.

I do have a fax setup on my HP officejet all in one but that is not running
through the computer and runs only on the printer. So my question still is,
is there any other location where there is a fax installer program set to
run on startup?

Hope this clarifies thing a lot more.

Thanks for all the help so far. It really has helped but one more step is
needed.

Regards,
