Boot up problem with explorer.exe / XP pro

On boot, I get the wallpaper only. I can go into task
manager and start explorer.exe and get my task bars and
icons. The solutions article # 555029 says that the
Shell value in the winlogin key should contain the
information
"Shell"="explorer.exe"

That value now reads:

Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\fservice.exe

When I try to overwrite this or add to it in regedit, the
value just reverts back to the above value. I've turned
on the permissions for this but it doesn't help. I'd
really like to avoid reloading Windows. Any ideas?

Sounds like fishy spyware/adware behaviour.

Once you've got your taskbar/icons back, run a virus scan
and adware/spyware scans to see if your computer is
infected.

Check the Symantec website for a free online virus
checker. Go to www.lavasoftusa.com for Ad-Aware and
www.safer-networking.org for Spybot Search&Destroy.

Let us know if anything came up. (And if anything did,
try changing the value of the reg key to explorer.exe and
see if it stays there).

Hope this helps,

Nick
