Boot up prob in XP

D

Dave

I have a computer that I can't get to boot up. It just
started to reboot in enless circle for no
apparent reason. No changes were made to the unit before
this happened.

When booting the unit it goes through POST and begins to
load the O/S and then shuts down and starts to reboot.
When loaded with WinXP the XP window comes on the screen
and appears it is going to load and after about 3 or 4
seconds it shuts down.

I couldn't find an obvious reason for the problem so I
reformatted the hard drive and reloaded Win 98 which is
the O/S being used before. The problem persisted. I
installed another hard drive that was loaded with Win98
and was able to boot up the machine. I noted the
resolution was 640x480 and color choices were 8 and 16
colors only. This lead me to believe their might be a
graphics board problem. So I changed graphics board from
AGP board in the machine to a PCI board I had as a spare.
The problem persisted. Not sure I understand why this
hard drive booted up since the new hard drive loaded with
Win98 would not.

I did note some problems with recognition of the HD when
I was reformating. I also noticed that a time of two when
looking at the BIOS the clock time had changed so I
changed the BIOS Battery.

The problem persisted. I was leaning toward the HD having
a problem by this time.

I reformatted HD and loaded WinXP thinking it has better
dianostics. Problem still persisted. I even
tried "Recovery Console" but could not find any command
to help trouble shoot this problem. By the way all HD
tests and scans did not indicate any problem with HD.

I purchased a new HD and formated and loaded WinXP to no
avail. Tried Win98 as well to no avail.

So I am at an impasse. Any suggestions as to whether it
is a hardware or software problem.

Thanks for anyone insight you might have,
Dave

First let's get to Recovery Console.

Next, we need to run chkdsk to check the drive for errors. If it finds one
(or if it doesn't) I still recommend running chkdsk /r after the first
chkdsk is found.

If this shows no errors then try and reboot normally.

If it shows it found errors then reboot an rerun the chkdsk till you find
no errors.

Also, I suggest, if possible, to load your disk as a secondary drive and
run chkdsk on it from within the primary drives O/S. This allows chkdsk to
run on an unmounted drive and it can check a little more thoroughly.

If it continues to find errors I suggest you have bad copies of the Windows
Media that may not be installing correctly or you could have bad sectors on
the drive. If you bought a new drive it should come with some H/W
diagnostics. If you run those and it checks well then, I suggest borrowing
another windows media CD from a friend and trying to install and verify
your media is good.

My last bit here is that when you run chkdsk and it shows no errors then
the O/S is installed correctly and files are where they should be thus, it
would have to be a hardware issue.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the information Jody.

I have done some of what you suggested. I have loaded
WinXP on another machine with this same media with no
problems. I have reformatted and loaded the O/S on the
original and a new HD so I tend to think the drive isn't
the problem. What puzzels me is that I was able to boot
up with another (third) HD drive installed, running Win98
although the video only functioned at the default level.

I will run chkdsk as you suggested. I do have access to
another media disk so I can load with that one.

I am beginning to believe it is a hardware problem. I
guess the only way I have of checking that is to start
replacing parts until the problem goes away.

Any suggestions on what components are most likely
problemactical? Any suggested order for replacement?

Thanks again for your help,
Dave
