Boot Problems NTLDR missing?

After defragging C:(system) and re-starting it has come
up with NTLDR missing immediately after first set of boot
screens (after verifying DMI pool data)
I have noted a knowledge base article about this failure
to find the NTLDR.. but this refers to an update of XP
from either 95, 98 or ME, this is not the case however as
it is a standalone XP Pro (ser pack 1)
so am unsure how best to proceed ??

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead
of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password
requested is blank, and TAB over.

Use the copy command to copy from the CD (assuming letter X: for the
drive)

COPY X:\i386\ntldr C:\ntldr

and hope that the problem goes no deeper.
