boot problem

I have a recently rebuilt computer ( hard drive died) It now goes fine
until just after the desktop opens , then it dies and goes back to the
bootup, it keeps doing this for several cycles and then will work
fine. If I then do a restart it runs fine.
If I do a log on boot up it stops just before ACPI uniprocessor and
then doesn;t laod anything else after that. It always boots OK in Safe
mode.
I tried a new install of winXP on a completely new drive and this
worked until I added another drive then the problem started.
Ideas please.

if it works fine in
safemode, then
try a clean boot:

perhaps logging into
the recovery console
with a windows cd then
running the commands:

fixmbr
bootcfg /rebuild

http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?mkt=en-US&form=MSHOME&setlan...

might as well do a
chkdsk while your
there.

I di that and it runs oK but soon it gets back to the endless loop, I
wondered if it is hardware related as it crashes just about 2 seconds
after the desktop comes up? Ideas anyone please..??
