Bluetooth networks

Hi,

I'm thinking of networking two XP machines together using bluetooth,
the machines are on different floors about 25ft apart. Now I don't
want to rip up the carpet and floorboards in order to run network
cable so I thought I could use bluetooth dongles to get both comps to
talk to one another.

The Question is has anyone done this without having any problems (the
sales assistant in the shop told me i couldn't do it and tried selling
me a much more expensive wireless network kit) Secondly, if it does
work can i enable internet connection sharing over it ?

That is really pushing the limits of bluetooth distance wise, especially
when going through walls and floors. The speed will not be that good with
bluetooth either. It is a short range, low speed protocol, which is slower
than most DSL or cable modems. 802.11b is getting very inexpensive, and
would give you better range and be about 10 times as fast, adequate for any
internet connection. 802.11g will give you closer to wired speeds, being 5
times as fast as 802.11b. I would not use bluetooth in your situation. The
salesman wasn't steering you wrong.

Wouldn't hold your breath. Might be possible if they were in the same
room but 25ft... no chance. I've got a full blown wireless network and
that does 35ft no problem but still doesn't connect at its full
potential. Too many walls etc. I'd buy a wireless router/modem. Then
there is no need to have a computer dedicated to connecting to your
ISP. You also get the benefit of the inbuilt firewall that usually
comes as standard.

As the other posters mentioned, Bluetooth is not appropriate.
A couple of 802.11b, PCI or USB network adapters can now be had for
under $50 USD. You don't need anything more than the adapters for
only 2 systems.

Hi,

Bluetooth is designed for transferring relatively small amounts of
data between devices a short distance apart, not large amounts over a
relatively large area. 25ft is large for Bluetooth, considering the
manufacturers only quote 30ft as the max.
