Blue screen of Death.

G'day all,

I'm trying to re-install WinXP Pro on a recalcitrant desktop. Having had
little success I went for a boot disk using floppy. Now on start up I get the
BSOD with the error

'STOP: c000007b {Bad Image}
The application or DLL \??\C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfcfiles.dll is not a valid
windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.'

Does anyone have any pointers on how to address this problem. Much obliged.

Alone with the other advice, run a memory check www.memtest86.com , a chkdsk
/r from repair console, if you can get there and the manufacturer of your
hard drive diagnostic test.

Thanks for the replies. Still no joy, a further degradation in performance,
now have the black screen of death and the computer will not boot up at all,
no system check completed. Aaaarrrrrgh!

Definitely hardware failure. You've gotten good advice - test hard
drive, RAM, motherboard, etc.

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).
