Blu Ray Weirdness in x64

My main workstation is XP x64 SP2. The system works great... but one small
problem has developed.

About a year and a half ago, I installed a Pioneer BDR 202 Blu Ray burner in
to the system to backup data. The burner worked fine and I was able to
backup many times using Nero to burn the data to the Blu Ray disc.

About a month ago, I went to re-load some data I had backed up to a Blu Ray
disc previously. When I put the Blu Ray disc into the drive and try to read
the disc using Windows Explorer... I get an error that says 'Incorrect
Function' and neither the label or the contents of the discs are shown. If I
try to read other data Blu Ray discs that I had burned previously, I get the
same error. But strangely, If I start my burning app (Nero) I am able to
burn data to a new Blu Ray disc with no problems (I just can't read the disc
when I'm done burning it).

I then tried putting a DVD-ROM disc into the drive and it reads it with no
problem. Same with a CD-ROM... no problem.

I contacted Pioneer and they said that that the Blu Ray laser portion of the
burner had probably failed and recommended I by a new one... so I bought
another burner. After installing it, I get the same error with any Blu Ray
data disc... it won't see it. But it works fine with DVD-ROMs or CD-ROMs, so
clearly both burners are working fine and there is some problem in the OS or
drivers that has caused the Blu Ray discs to not be seen.

This workstation is VERY important to my business and I do not want to
re-install the OS.

Is there any way to re-install whatever drivers that relate to the Blu Ray
burner without disturbing the rest of the system?

Thanks for any ideas!

This is purely a guess. You'd have to start, by understanding how
you wrote the disks in the first place, and what file system was
used.

You could connect your BDR 202 to a Vista machine. Or an even
more obscure fix, might be to set up Windows 7 on a separate
boot drive, and see if it has support. So it's possible your
current setup allows writing a disc, but not reading it back.

Paul,

Thanks very much for the ideas and links!

I'm sure I didn't make myself totally clear. I have been using this XP x64
system with this drive and Nero Burning ROM 7 to burn data Blu Ray discs for
a year without problems. I was able to sucessfully burn the discs and to
read them on this system. So it was working but now something has changed
with the OS or drivers or apps and now a Blu Ray UDF disc will not be seen.

When I open Nero... there are only two Blu Ray options presented. Blu Ray
Disc Copy (which I never use because I am not copying Blu Ray discs) and Blu
Ray Disc (UDF). So the discs are in UDF format. (I don't have some other
Blu Ray disc to test with or I would try that).

In searching for answers to the given error: 'drive is not accessible.
Incorrect function.'... I have seen a bunch of posts relating to Roxio
software possibly causing this problem. I don't use that software but Dell
may have had that on the system and perhaps I uninstalled it and don't recall.

I have a bunch of other systems Win2000, XP and XP x64 but many are servers
and systems where the drive will physically not fit or do not have SATA
connections. I do have one system where it will fit and does have SATA but I
have to find some SATA cables to be able to install. So that will take some
time.

But it was working on this system and something changed.

Will dig deeper. Thanks again.

OK. I thought you'd never tried to access the backups, and
that was your first attempt at it.

By any chance, did you recently add iTunes to the computer ?
iTunes comes with its own DLLs for burning media.

There is always "upperfilter/lowerfilter" fix, but I'm not
sure your symptoms match. You're still able to write new
media, and you probably wouldn't be able to do that, if it
was a filter driver in the way.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=314060

iTunes uses drivers from gearsoftware.com . This is an
example of their driver removal process, with reference
to upperfilter in it. There are other examples, like
"cdgone.reg" around, which work on similar issues.

http://www.gearsoftware.com/wiki/in...ws_-_Updating,_removing,_64_bit_versions,_etc

You have to be very careful, if editing the registry. Not
every "Upperfilter" is a candidate to be deleted. There is
one for example, that is tied to the keyboard. If you
delete that one, the keyboard can stop working.

Paul,

Thanks again for the ideas!

Although I mostly burn backup data Blu Ray discs and don't read them back in
often... I am positive that I read them sucessfully in the past. I am sure
the first thing I would have done when I first installed the drive and made a
backup disc was to check and try to read it to make sure all was working well.

A note about Nero... when using it to make a UDF Blu Ray, there are several
tabs to choose from when you tell it that you want to make a new disc. On
the UDF tab... I normally leave it at 'Automatic' but I see when I choose
manual that it presents several different UDF formats to choose from (UDF
1.02, 1.5, 2.0, 2.01, 2.5, and 2.6). I don't know which one it was choosing
when on Auto, but clearly it is capable of several (may have to try a manual
test... I would guess that the lowest number would be most compatible?). (It
also has a UDF setting for Physical or Virtual Partition).

I don't have iTunes on this system so I dont' think thats an issue.

Will keep trying! Thanks again.

OK, I got the problem solved... very weird.

When in Nero Burning ROM 7 and beginning to make a Blu-Ray disc... the UDF
tab defaults to 'Automatic' settings (and it doesn't show you exactly what
these automatic settings are). In the past, I have always left it at this
default 'Automatic' setting and the resulting disc was fine and readable.

But because of this problem, I experimented and changed the setting to
'Manual' and then the different UDF formats become available. Using a BD-RE
rewritable disc to experiment with, I first set the UDF setting to UDF 1.02
and burned a disc and chose to verify the data after burning. The data
verified just fine and the resulting disc is readable in XP x64 with no
problem. Same with UDF 2.01 as well as UDF 1.5.

So it appears that perhaps the Nero software changed at some point as to the
'Automatic' setting used. So the data discs I have made recently can not be
read in XP x64 but probably are readable by some newer OS (Vista) which
recognizes the later UDF formats.

Thanks!

That was just Nero being helpful :)

Paul,

Sigh... I spoke too soon. Looks like Nero is continuing to be helpful.

In my testing, I was sucessfully able to burn Blu-Ray UDF discs on BD-RE
rewritable discs... so I thought the problem had been solved by picking the
UDF formats that x64 would like.

But then this morning I went to use the same method to burn onto a BDR disc
and made another coaster that is unreadable.

In Nero Burning ROM there is a function called Disc Info that just shows
info about a burned disc. When viewing the unreadable BDR disc... it says
'Session Open' with a little key next to it. When viewing a readable BD-RE
that was sucessfully burned, it does NOT say 'Session Open'. I'm thinking
that this could be the problem (even though I had checked 'Finalize Disc'
when burning the BDR disc).

Still trying to get this to work.

Thanks!

You would think "Finalize" would have closed it.

Yep, you would. And also choosing 'No Multisession' at the beginning should
have made a non-multisession, closed disc.

I was able to start a new session by choosing 'Continue Multisession' and it
properly shows the stuff already burned on the disc. Then I started looking
for a way to 'Finalize' the disc (Finalize disc is still checked!). I added
a small file and hit burn but an error was thrown and it didn't sucessfully
burn (or close) the disc.

Sending some emails to Nero now.

Thanks!
