Blocked some start-up programs?

Vista always says "Windows has blocked some start-up programs" when I
reboot. So What! It doesn't offer a way to turn them off. How can I get
rid of these bad programs, and why are they there? My Avast anti-virus and
Ad Aware say I'm clean. TIA, Paul

Well, you had better check Start-up, using MSconfig at the Run box and
also the Start folder, because that is where programs and program
short-cuts are placed that execute at system boot and start-up. The
programs may be legit and who is stopping the programs is Windows
Defender. And you will be notified, until you configure Windows Defender
that the programs are OK and allow them to start without notification.

They're not necessarily bad programs, they may simply be unknown to Windows
Defender and not specifically approved to run by you when some software or
other was installed. Some software updating utilities that want to run at
boot can cause that message. Check in Defender for pending approvals. If
listed and you recognise the programs you can permit them to run, otherwise
you can uninstall the software.

Hi

i checked windows defender again and the program that keeps getting
blocked is:

*Microsoft Registry editor*
*publisher: *microsoft corporation
*digitally signed by: *microsoft windows verification pca
*file type: *application
*startup value: *regedit.exe /s c:\users\(my user
account)\appdata\local\temp\\uac_enable.reg
*file path: *c:\windows\regedit.exe
*file size: *134656
*file version: *6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)
*date installed: *30/06/2008 22:31:32
*startup type: *registry: local machine
*location: *software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
*classification: *permitted
*ships with operating system: *yes
*spynet voting: *not applicable

why is ms blocking their own programs?

One of the best ways ever to *really* mess up a system is careless or
uninformed use of regedit.exe. Even informed usage is dangerous :)

Regedit is not a casual application that just anybody should run on an
arbitrary Tuesday afternoon.

Which Tuesday afternoon is the preferred one?

Which Tuesday afternoon is the preferred one?

For a sophisticated user, tomorrow. For one lacking any experience, I'd say
Tuesday, February 14, 2034.

Of course, YMMV.

OK, I admit it, I deserved that question :)
