Blank screen after updating to Windows XP Home Edition

After upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows XP home Edition I experienced the following problem. When the computer is turned on it goes through its normal functions. The Window XP Home Edition logo comes up. Then the problem occurs. The screen goes blank. The green light on the monitor to the left turns off. The music comes on as if tit is loading, but no display. What is going on? How can I correct the problem.

Can you go in to safe mode successfully; if so, try to remove and/or uninstal all the software for the video and go in to device manager and remove the video card--let it be refound on start up
check the manufacturers web site for compatability with winX
tap F8 at reboot to get a selection screen...choose safe mode--if it works, it might be your video drive
Basically when Windows gets to the windows xp splash screen, it goes from real mode to protected mode
