Black Screen at Startup

I installed Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 recently. When I restarted
my computer, after the Bios boot, Windows XP Logo and the loading bar doesn't
come up. I tried to install Windows with Boot from CD, but still the black
screen appears. I changed the first boot device to CD Rom and disabled all
the others. But still the problem presists. I have my latest video driver
installed. Please help me..............if there are.................any
Microsoft Professionals around or someone else. The same happens with the 98
Bootable CD. Thanks in advance!

Assuming the o/s was functioning up untill sp2, are you able to boot to safe
mode?
(hit F8 repeatedly whilst sys is starting, before you see any logos/win
booting msgs)

What speed processor does this computer have? How much memory is
installed? Can you boot into safe mode? Do you see the bootup dialog
during bootup before the XP splash screen usually should appear?
Did you reset any of the BIOS settings?

Good Luck,

I have Intel Pentium4 - 2.66GHz
Yes, the boot dialog appears.
No, I can't boot into safe mode. I'll see if I can.
The bios is working fine.
Plug and Play devices are turned on.
Help me in this issue if you can.

I pressed F8l but it aks that select a boot drive first. I chose the Hard
Disk. After that the same thing happens - the black screen comes up.

Visit your HD manu web site, download their free testing utility, create the
floppy and boot with this to test the hd

Kam,

Open up the computer and make sure that the data cable is securely
fastened AND that the power connector is securely fastened.
It's possible that the connectors (one or the other) was not connected
completely and vibration may have caused it to become disconnected.

Hi Trevor!
I am sure that my power cable to my hard disk and CD Rom is securely
connected. But what is a data cable? There are two wires attached to my sata
hard disk. I can't even make it a slave in the other computer because it a
sata hard disk

A thin ribbon cable, about 1cm wide

Yes, a thin red cable is attached from the motherboard to the hard disk. And
for that Hard Disk checkup utility from the hard disk's manufacturer, is it
possible to put that program on a empty CD which I can make bootable by Nero
Burning Rom 6?

Depends on your hd manu, as to whether they have a utility that runs from cd
Floppy's still have their uses

Ok...............I may have written before that Windows 98 Bootable didn't
work..............but it worked this time I tried. But..........I'm not able
to delete the extended dos partition. It says Cannot delete Extended DOS
Partition while logical drives exist. When I try to delete the logical drives
it says No Logical Drives defined. Does anyone here have the answer to delete
the extended dos partition when no logical drives exist and there is the
error above? Maybe DL, you can help.

I have downloaded Delpart. But how can I burn it into a CD? Do I have to burn
an ISO Image or make it into a bootable CD?

Delpart.exe just a tiny (self) executable file whose only purpose it to
delete partitions. Copy the file to a floppy diskette or burn it to a
cd and then boot your computer with your Windows 9x startup media and
run the command. For example if you copy delpart to a floppy diskette,
while in DOS you can issue the following command:

a:delpart

or just navigate do the disk where delpart is and launch it.

What di you mean by Windows 9X startup media? I don't have a floppy disk. I
just only have one Combo DVD ROM

You said in your earlier post:

"Ok, I may have written before that Windows 98 Bootable didn't
work, but it worked this time I tried. But, I'm not able
to delete the extended dos partition."

How did you start "Windows 98 Bootable"? With a startup media of some
sort, your Windows 98 CD perhaps? You have to use the same method to
start the computer then use delpart to delete the partitions.

In any case, as I said in another post, you can delete these partitions
with your Windows XP setup CD, I'm not sure why you need to use DOS
(Windows 98 startup disk) to delete these partitions. But if you insist
on using the Windows 98 startup method you will have to use delpart to
delete the partitions, as you have already discovered fdisk cannot
delete them.

Windows XP Setup won't start with boot from CD, so I have to take the Windows
98 Bootable Disc
