BITS service won't start.

My Windows Update downloads failed. I looked up the error code,
80246008, on Microsoft's site, and followed the procedure for adding
BITS to netsvcs in the registry. I rebooted, as per instructions, and
the Windows Update downloads once again failed. I looked in Services for
BITS, and it was not started. When I attempted to start it, I got Error
1058: "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or
because it has no enabled devices associated with it."

Where do I go from here? I want Windows Update to work, for obvious reasons.

Sincerely, Jonathan Cohen

Is Background Intelligent Transfer Service set to Automatic?

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK |
Double click Background Intelligent Transfer Service |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Apply | Now click the Start button |

If it still won't start, see if the Workstation service running.
If not, set it to Automatic.

BITS is dependant on Workstation.

BITS is set to automatic.
Workstation service is running.

Still, the problem persists. BITS silently fails startup on reboot.

Thanks for a good try; I still need help.

I'm still stuck. BITS won't start up. Is my only recourse at this point
to open up a support incident with Microsoft? What level of technical
support do I need/have to pay for in order to get this question
addressed quickly and with a minimum of bull****? (I've had to put up
with a great deal of said bull**** from certain companies' outsourced
help desks in the past.)

Have you made any further progress on this issue? I am having the same
problem. I wonder if it is related to the issue I was having with Automatic
Updates being deleted on re-boot. I found the solution to that in another
section of this user group. Go to "Windows Update General" and find the
thread named "Automatic Updates service keeps getting deleted" and see if
there are any clues there that may be related to the problem you described.
The problem I was having with AU was that a trojan (Trojan.Boxed.E) inserted
an executable into C:\WINDOWS\system32. The executable marks AU for deletion.
It also inserts a Network Client service in the services.msc list, and a key
in the registry. By disabling Network Client service AU now stays enabled
through re-boots but BITS service goes from started to stopped on the
re-boot. I'm wondering if the trojan has also caused the BITS problem, which
was not addressed in the thread I mentioned above.
