Our system seems to have an error whereby the background intelligence
transfer system -BITS- (under start, run, services.msc) cannot be started. As
a result I cannot uplink any windows update data etc. The computer is a Dell
Dimension 8300 using a preloaded Win XP system. Does anyone know as to what
the cause is likely to be, how to fix / repair it so as to be able to start
the BITS. Thank You.

Start>Run services.msc
In the services window locate BITS, (Background Inteligent Transfer Service)
double click, Properties>Dependencies tab
There are 5 dependency services, if any one of these has 'failed' then BITS
will also

Thank you..under the dependencies tab was the following: (1) This service
depends on the following system components...Under was listed 'Remote
procedure call (RPC)'. (2) The Following system components depend on this
service..under this was 'no dependencies'.

When I try to start the BITS, I also get the message "error 1058. The
service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because it has no
enabled devices associated with it."

I'm not currently on my WinXp sys, but using Win2k; that being said the
dependancies for BITS shown are:
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
System Event Notification, which in turn depends on, Com+Event System, RPC,
Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions

Thanks for the information. All I have there under 'dependencies' is the RPC.
I have also had someone locally check their system and it is exactly the
same, yet they are able to run their BITS file. So, the question is how to
get the system reestablished and be able to get that BITS file started so as
to be able to again use the windows updates etc.
