Birthday & anniversary date shifting

C

Chuck Martin

I just found an interesting and strnge phenonenon with my Outlook 2002
installation: all of my entered birthdays and anniversaries seem to have
shifted, for most, if not all, one day backward (if the actual date is, say,
August 15, the date that appears in the contact in August 14).

This problem seems to have multiple symptoms and I'd like to try and figure
out (a) how it happened, and (b) if there's an easy way to resolve it wihout
manuall resetting all the dates.

The thing is, I can't seem to do that (but I'll get back to that in a
minute).

First problem is that in the calendar, all the borthdays and anniversaries
are now "stretched" over 2 consecutive days. Well, not all, just all future
birthdays and anniversaries. But they just "look" that way in month view.
(There's also a little clock icon in month and week views; the icon is on
the left on the first day and on the right on the second day.)

Looking more at this, it looks like this is happening to all future all-day
events, because holidays are being duplicated while other sppointments are
not.

When I go into the individual contact with the intent of changing the date
(by double clicking on the embedded object in the General tab), I get 2
error messages:

"Some objects contain viruses that can be harmful to your computer. it's
important to be sure that this object is from a trusworthy source.

Do you trust this embedded object?"

and then

"The path specified for the file C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst is not valid."

Well, in my case, outlook.pst is at C:\Documents\and Settings\Owner\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

The latter is the file location set in File > Data File Management. The
former is where the .pst file *used* to be on my old Windows 98 system. But
I got this new system 6 months ago and was using it without issue intil the
past few days, and I discovered this anomaly just today.

I will say this a week ago I installed new softwre that integrates/connects
with Outlook data, a Times Ironman DataLink USB watch. I cannot say one way
or another if the problem is linked to this new software.

I also use a PocketPC, which I synch on occasion (an HP Jornada 768).

These "calendar objects" embedded in my contacts seems to have kept the
pointer to the old data path, even though Outlook itself uses the current
one for all its other transactions.

Is my only option to:

1. Delete all existing future all day events (birthday, anniversaries, and
holidays) in the Calendar.
2. Manually delete, save, and then re-enter all the birthdays and
anniversaries in Contacts?
3. Re-import holidays.
4. Go through all the birthday and anniversary entries in the Calendar and
set them all to 1 week reminders (instead of the default 15 minutes).

Even if that's the case, I'd still like to get answers for the following:

- Why did this happen?
- What, if anything, can be done to prefent is recurrence?
- Why do birthdays and anniversaries have to be embedded objects in a
Contact, rather then just being set in the fields designated for them?
- Why didn't the data path with these object get updated when the path to
the .pst file did?
- Why can't separate reminder defaults be set for birthdays and
anniversaires? (A particularly annoying usability issue that I've
communicated to Microsoft in previous versions.)

Please cc: respnses to me as well as posting to the group.

Thank you.

I'm still looking for an answer to this. Anyone?

have you checked to make sure you have your time set to Automaticall
adjust to daylight savings time? i know this might sound dumb, bu
outlook uses the time on your computer, unless it's set up to go of
the servers time. Just double click on the time in your system tray
click on Time Zone, and make sure you have adjust clock for dayligh
savings time, checked. hope this helps
