Big Slow Down

Hi!

My computer is HP Pavilion zd7377EA. Well, it WAS working fast.... Now after
2 years, it began to slow down. The pattern is that after 2 days-1 week of
slowing down, it wil return to normal condition (working fast, etc) for a
limited period. (1 week-2 weeks). Things that I've noticed: Hard disk Does
not stop working (the indicator is nearly always lit). FYI, I turned off the
indexing service, so that is not the reason. When it started up, in normal
condition it will take less than 5 mins, but in this condition took about 10
mins-15 mins. WHen starting up, I noticed that the taskbar does not appear
until several seconds later (I also set my computer to view windows version
number by powertoys, and also noticed that the version number is underneath
the taskbar until several second after the taskbar appeared, when it moved
just above it - this NEVER happened in normal condition).

I use 2 windows: XP Home and XP MCE, and when one of them got slowdown, the
other will as well. So, this is not about the operating system.

I also checked in "Performance" (Administrative tools), that the hard disk
and memory activity level is always high (memory is slightly lower than hard
disk). Processor is unaffected.

The temperature is quite hot.

I have to admit though that I normally turned on my computer 24/7, with
Always On mode (with "Never" selected for automatic monitor, hard disk,
hibernation and standby in the "Power" option).

In my opinion, the hard disk needs to be replaced, but I would like other
opinions.

Thanks

"The temperature is quite hot."

And that's the most likely reason for your problem. Blame it on shmutz
inside the case or faulty ventilation fans.

Thanks. I solved the problem. I changed the hard disk, and that ends all the
problem.

Then what was probably happening was that the hard drive was indeed having trouble, so the system kept trying to read from it, but
it wasn't working, which would cause the system to practically hang until it timed out.

I hope you used your warranty if you had one.

Yes, i think that is the problem. I saw the error log, and found a lot of
"30000 millisecond timeout" or something like that.

My computer is out of warranty, but I already arrange for a pick-up and
service tomorrow for other problem (pink line on my monitor - I can't stand
it) for £280. I can also get my hard disk repaired, as it said that
regardless of how many problems you have, you will need to pay £280. I might
use the other hard disk (that I am using now) for my future Playstation 3.
