Beta 2

I never had a problem with beta 1 but beta 2 has become a real big problem.

I installed it and was never able to update it.

There was no icon on the desktop or the offer of one. There was no notation
in the start menu and no offer of one.

I realize that it is only a beta but there should be a better interface.

But then the real problem began: It slowed down my machine acting as if it
were a trojan/virus etc. For three days I could not find where it had
installed itself in order to get rid of it.

It did the following: it ran itself in the background and caused me to be
unable to see/read attachments on my email. I was unable to download
programs or files which I have never had problems with before. This is a
very big problem as I beta test programs.

Finally I was able to get rid of it but the problems still existed. I found
that it had hidden itself in the background even after it was uninstalled
much like Symantec programs. I no longer use them due to that. I spent a lot
of valuable time tracking the problem down until finally I was able to clear
it up and my machine is running pretty much normally.

This program needs a lot of work until it becomes a worthwhile program for
its intended purpose.

Werner

Werner-- I'm sorry--you seem to have hit nearly every significant bug I can
think of in beta2. Am I correct that your install was to a non-English
version of Windows? And that likely it was done with a download which
happened before February 22?

Some of your issues were fixed by changes to the installer routines on
February 22nd. It also sounds like the install wasn't complete--hence the
lack of an add/remove programs entry.

The lack of an uninstall choice in add or remove programs also points to an
incomplete install.

The changes to the install routine fixed the icon in the start menu problem.

The icon in the tray is the way the program is, but it will be optionally
turned on at some later point.

The scanning engine runs in the background and a full scan can be quite
resource intensive.

One of your bugs I experienced on my own system--the inability to open
attachments or download files--I hadn't associated it with Windows Defender
until I saw others posting the same issue and realized that was the same
thing I was seeing.

We have a fix for this one as well, although it takes a little effort to
work through.

So--I agree that what you saw was a series of real problems that should not
have happened.

I hope that this hasn't totally soured you on the program--I don't know what
to say--how about--When it is released, if the reviewers give it good marks,
will you try it again--and come back and tell us your experience?

Bill, Thanks for your reply. I just sent a message detailing my big problem.
Hope you can find it on this newsgroup.

I've decided to wait a while to try to reinstall it What I need is to get my
machine to run normally which it has not been doing for the last few days.
I've completely removed the WD directory and any icons I could find but
there seems to still be something running or loading that I can't locate. I
suppose it's in windows\system32 directory. Can you make a suggestion.

Windows Defender is pretty clean, I believe--the stuff in its folder should
be all that matters.

There's at least one report of a user finding processes apparently related
to Microsoft Antispyware still running on his system after the uninstall--I
don't think we ever got to the bottom of that one.

Want to say more about what you feel isn't right?
