best zoom in/out in graphics viewer?

I found a new zoom in/out function in a trialware program. Click left
button to zoom in, right to zoom out. But the key to it was that when you
zoomed in and out, the display was centered on the exact point where you
clicked. So it was a zooming and a centering at the same time.

It's bad when you zoom in and then you have to use scroll bars to find the
part you were trying to zoom in on.

In freeware, the best I've seen is Picasa. You use the slider to zoom
in/out, but then the displayed section is shown as a little rectangle in a
little thumbnail of the whole picture. You can move the rectangle around
the thumbnail to display different zoomed-in parts of the whole picture.

Still, I like the "zoom and center" method better. Anyone seen that in a
freeware program?

Either FastStone Image Viewer or Fast Stone MaxView will do what you want.

In Irfanview you can use the mouse make a selection, the cursor
turns into a magnifying glass inside the selection, and click
the mouse, and Irfanview will zoom to the selection, more or
less.

On one hand, this requires using the mouse, but on the other you
can more precisely select exactly what you want to zoom to in
one step. You might have to do multiple zooms with the arrow
zoom keys to get exactly what you want.
