Best freeware news reader

Zed Rafi

Hello all

i've been looking for a good freeware news reader. been experimenting with a
bunch, and haven't found one that i like.

i would have stuck with outlook express, but it seems to be giving me some
problems with it lately, which i believe originates from the OE / windows
Messenger link.

i want something simple with good organisation and a good interface. I don't
need any enhanced download support for binary groups. if it comes with it it
would be a plus, but i have no problem sacrifying this feature for something
with a better interface.

any suggestions?
thanks

Which ones have you tried and given up on?

(There's no point, for example, in suggesting XNews or Gravity if
you've already decided against them.)

IMO the best is Dialog, but you have to choose what's the best for you.

I also switched from OE and after trying numerous different newsreaders
I settled on Xananews.

Opera's news reader works just fine for me, and it is keystroke-consistent
with the mail reader.

Tried loads, but always came back to Thunderbird. Just so easy.

OE is an abomination (IMO). XNews is good, if somewhat arcane. Free
Agent is friendly.

There is a newsreader integrated in Thunderbird. I prefer to have an
integrated email & news agent, and with it's spam filter, for me
Thunderbird and its newsreader is the best

Xnews isn't the simplest, but if you work with it a bit, it's awesome. The
best I've tried.

I have been using Agent since 1997. I feel I can no longer recommend
it as I once did since the version 3 interface is clunky and
unfriendly in comparison to previous incarnations. I doubt that I will
be renewing my subscription any more unless they dramatically improve.

I asked this not too long ago and got no response, THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE, this
looks like the WINNER AND new CHAMPION. Agent V3.x has killed a once great
product.

You know how to "merge" the same newsgroup on multiple servers into one
newsgroup and make it pull posts from all 3 from their web site:

Multiple server support
Dialog supports multiple servers. Though the same groups on different servers
are presented as separate groups in Dialog, you can copy or move articles into
one group, either manually or by using a filter that does it automatically. This
is a great way to fill missing parts of multipart postings from other news
servers. Dialog has support for SSL connections.

You have any idea where to set this up?

Thanks for the suggestion looks like I finally will be able to run ONE program
and ONE instance of the program.

In the scoring and action window. Suppose you're setting the rule for the
newsgroup "a.binary.group" that you subscribed with NewsserverOne and other
newsservers, and you want all messages merged in the group fetched from
NewsserverOne. From Dialog's help:

| [a.binary.group] !move(a.binary.group;NewsserverOne) bytes %>0
|
| Say, you are using two newsservers named "NewsserverOne" and
| "NewsserverTwo". Both newsservers have the group "a.binary.group", but
| while most of the messages are the same in this group on the two
| servers, there are some that are not available on the other server. The
| first line in the preceding sample makes sure that the following rule is
| only applied to the "a.binary.group" newsgroup. The rule itself simply
| says to move all articles (since the condition "bytes %>0" is always
| met) to the group a.binary.group of NewsserverOne. If you retrieve
| message headers for this group from server NewsserverOne, the rule is
| ignored, since all articles go to the correct group anyway. If you
| retrieve message headers from NewsserverTwo for this group though, they
| will not show up in "a.binary.group (NewsserverTwo)", but in
| "a.binary.group (NewsserverOne)".
|
| The result is that you joined messages from the same group, but
| different newsservers into one group in Dialog. This is especially
| useful for binary groups to fill missing multipart postings.

Thanks for the suggestion looks like I finally will be able to run ONE program
and ONE instance of the program.

YW :)

Thanks for the reply, but I don't seem to be getting that to work
